Quixel Suite VS Substance Painter

General / 02 January 2020

Hey guys, happy 2020!

This will not be a compassing post from my behalf, but more of a quick story...
When PBR just entered the 3D scene, I quickly jumped on Substance painter, however, I did not like it at first so I switched to Quixel suite and felt right at home, from the get go.

Since the start of 2019. I kinda started hating Quixel, due to the fact, that my friend/business partner worked in Substance and pretty much everything seemed a lot better and faster! The idea to switch was planted in my head, but I just needed that extra push to do it! Well, that push came in November, when we worked on a huge environment pack for Unreal market and run into issues...
The non existing tri-planar mapping never slowed me down due to good UV maps, but it turns out, UE marketplace support is REALLY GOOD LOL.
They pretty much found each and every seem that we had on the scene and all of them came from my models haha
I also really enjoy the speed and performance on substance painter and on-mesh painting system!

So, I switched to Substance and damn, it is like 100x better than it was at the very beginning! I am really happy that I made the switch and probably will use Quixel only for some kind of tillable textures or something...

Perhaps someone has a similar story?  :)

This is my first work in Substance painter! (You can also check the complete project on my profile!)

Polysquid Studios

News / 12 August 2018

Hi to all my followers and friends!

Last few years were crazy and super busy for me.

Edgar and I ware working so much, to get our company Polysquid Studios up and running.

Never had I imagine, that starting Your own business would be so hard, especially, if You have a day job and limited time.
It has been over 3 years, since we started to build our own business and only now, we feel that things are starting to get more serious and all that hard work is paying off. We still work day jobs, but every month the reality of going full time in our own business is more and more realistic.

I have not done any 3d models for over two months and this is the reason why: https://polysquid.com/

Had to re-learn WordPress and built our website. Also, worked a lot on our marketing, asset stores and tons of networking for our studio.

Page is still somewhat WIP, but we feel that it is good enough, to show someone lol

So, please check out our web page and follow us on social media, for more news!

Here is a small bonus footage, to keep You guys interested lol:

What's happening with freelance work?

General / 13 June 2018

Basically, the title is my main question and here is the short version, why...

Long time ago, in far galaxy away, in years 2010-2014, I was a full time freelance artist. At that time, I did not have such good skills or portfolio, but I managed to find tons of work and even had a client base. Times ware not always awesome, but I managed to earn some money and make a living.

Skip forward few years, the good 2017-2018(now). My skills are grown so much, portfolio is way better, than it was (like 100x better), however, not that many freelance offers. Most of the time, people ask WAY too much, for ridiculous amount of money.

For example, indie studio contacted me and wanted AAA weapons, just like metro, fallout and so on. Not gonna lie, I was exited, ready to take on the job, when suddenly, he posted the budget for it: around 300$ for weapon...
Another interesting offer was: I need an environment, with multiple areas (beach, shops, streets and so on) generic style, but good quality and fast. Budget: 500$

At that point, I started to laugh...
Don't get me wrong, from time to time, I get some solid freelance offers, that are well payed and interesting, but still, strange offers are coming way too often. I know that nowadays, there are tons of amazing artists and asset stores, that offers good quality assets for decent money.
But game industry seems to be growing like wildfire and games are popping out each day...

Can someone relate to this?

Or I'm just getting the short end of the stick lol

Still, things are great and all is well!
Cheers!

Geiger Counter Animation + Scene

General / 27 March 2018

Today, I was sitting and thinking about sketchfab and realized, that I haven't posted anything for a while.

They had some new cool features, so I decided to try them out.

My goal was to make a nice scene for geiger counter, that would have post-apo vibe to it.

Here is what I came up with:
